Last month the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) announced a possible 2.5% increase in the average rate of workers’ compensation premiums for 2012. Every year, L&I is required to review premiums and make changes to cover the projected costs of claims filed in the coming year.
In anticipation of a large turnout at its public rate hearing on Wednesday, October 26, L&I announced that it will relocate the venue. The hearing was originally scheduled for L&I’s Tukwila location, but will now take place at 1:30 p.m. in Renton at the Renton Pavilion, 233 Burnett Ave. South. The first two hours of parking are free for attendees who use the facility garage.
The anticipated rate increase is an average for all Washington employers. Individual businesses may see rates increase or decrease depending on their own work injury claims history and any changes in the general risk and cost of claims in their particular industry. L&I expects that it will now be able to accommodate the large number of attendants who have expressed interest in commenting on the 2012 proposed rate during these hearings.
Additional hearings on the proposed rates will take place in:
- Vancouver, Oct. 25, 9 a.m., Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay
- Bellingham, Oct. 26, 1 p.m., Bellingham Public Library
- Richland, Oct. 27, 1 p.m., Red Lion Hotel Richland Hanford House
- Spokane Valley, Oct. 28, 10 a.m., Spokane CenterPlace Event Center
- Tumwater, Oct. 28, 10 a.m., L&I Headquarters
The final rates will be approved in December and be implemented on January 1, 2012.
