guide dogs of america

Did you know that the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) founded Guide Dogs of America? Guide Dogs of America is committed to the mission of training guide dogs and providing instruction in their use at no charge to blind and visually impaired Americans. This allows individuals to pursue their goals with enhanced mobility and independence.

Guide Dogs of America was founded more than 60 years ago by a joint effort between Joseph Jones (a retired member of the IAMAW) and the IAMAW itself. When Mr. Jones fell blind, he explored all his options and determined that his mobility needs would best be met with the aid of a guide dog. He applied to every existing school at the time, but was turned down because of his “advanced age.” Jones was only 57 years old.

Jones was a committed man and would not take no for an answer. He looked to the IAM for help, approaching the IAM’s Executive Council. After completing extensive research, they determined that there was a growing need for guide dog services, and therefore endorsed the founding of International Guiding Eyes (IGE) In 1948. The IAMAW continues to be a generous supporter and staunch advocate of the school’s mission today.

In 1992, International Guiding Eyes changed its business name to Guide Dogs of America to better communicate services offered through the organization. Today, the organization operates under the name Guide Dogs of America as an International Guiding Eyes Program. Today Guide Dogs of America seeks new and better ways of helping the blind community.

Workers’ Compensation Attorneys

The Seattle L&I attorneys at Emery Reddy can defend your legal rights if you have experienced workplace discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Our workers’ compensation lawyers also help workers recover benefits from their L&I claim. If you are eligible for added benefits, our team can also help you get wage replacement, assistance returning to work, and pensions or disability benefits in the case of a severe injury.

Workers with permanent loss of function may need an attorney to help them recover a permanent partial disability award or monthly pension. Washington workers often qualify for such benefits even when their impairment does not prevent them from returning to work.

See Washington state’s Permanent Partial Disability award schedules.
