Limitations to Compensation for Damage to Property

Property damage reimbursement is limited to the following:

  • Prescription eyeglasses or contacts
  • Clothing
  • Shoes or boots
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices (earplugs, muffs), hard hats, respirators, and full-body suits.

Why Doesn’t L&I Cover All Property Damage?

When L&I denies requests for property damage reimbursement, sometimes the Department doesn’t have enough evidence outright to prove tht your property was indeed damaged in the workplace accident. When this happens, the best move is often to pay for the clothing or gear outright and seek reimbursement later in the process after the proof has been developed and the claim has been approved. In this case, be sure to keep the receipt or proof of purchase for the items so you can give them to L&I later on.
