The total number of charges of discrimination against employers throughout Washington state is on the rise. This is partly linked to the fact that the Seattle, Bellevue, Everett and Tacoma metro areas have some of the fastest growing job markets in the nation. The professional and service sectors are rapidly growing, according to projections from the Washington’s Employment Security Department (ESD).

This growth is considered a strong indicator of the overall economy because jobs that fall in that sector are actually used in many other industries. Professional and business services do work that’s contracted by other businesses, ranging from computer design services to architectural and engineering services, landscaping and janitorial services. In both 2016 and 2017, analysts declared Seattle one of the “hottest job markets” in the country in terms of hiring. If those trends continue, all signs point to continued promise for job seekers in our region in the coming years.

But increased job growth and turnover means that hiring and firing decisions are often pushed down to lower-level managers and human resources professionals. Unfortunately, some corporate decision-makers don’t play fair. They withhold offers based on race, pregnancy, age, or disability, offer less pay than a new employee deserves, or treat workers unfairly.
