Outdoor workers need Protection From Outdoor Heat Exposure

As temperatures rise year after year, so does the risk of incurring a heat-related health issue or injury — especially for those who work outside.

In the summers of 2021 and 2022, the Washington State Department of L&I filed emergency rules to protect outdoor workers’ health from ambient heat exposure, and the related occurrence of heat-related illnesses — but this only addressed worker access to drinking water.

This new rule would provide for more protections from the heat including cool-down rest periods, mandatory rest periods when the temperatures climb above 90 degrees, and access to shade. Learn more about your worker’s rights today.
