Charting Women in the Workplace

In a recent New York Times interactive feature on women in the workplace, reporters included a handy graphic showing the number of female-held private sector jobs rising to a record high in June 2013, passing the previous high water mark from before the recent Recession (December 2007). That period marks the longest stretch between highs in private sector employment for women since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began to measure gender in the workplace back in 1964. The charts track workplace trends for men and women in a number of different industries following the employment peak at the beginning of 2008. A number of sectors with significant portions of female employees took less of a hit in the downturn, as shown in the following graphs.
