As coronavirus-related restrictions pile up with each new government mandate aimed at slowing the spread of the disease, also known as COVID-19, workers throughout Washington state are feeling the squeeze.
In response, the state has highlighted benefits available to affected workers and has provided new protections in some cases.
Washington’s Employee Security Department (ESD) created the following infographic (updated March 12) listing the employer- or state-provided benefits available to workers in 12 common scenarios, including having to isolate or quarantine, being temporarily laid off, or losing their job due to coronavirus.

In March, Gov. Jay Inslee and the Washington Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) expanded workers’ compensation benefits to all quarantined heath care workers and first responders.
Inslee’s office has a dedicated COVID-19 page, listing all statewide measures taken to combat the outbreak to-date, as well as links to county-level information the latest information for veterans, business owners and parents, among others.
State agencies are also working to compile a larger list of local bankers, financial associations, telecoms, utilities and major employers that may be able to provide relief, including:
- Deferred bills, waived fees, discounts, no-interest loans and other support.
- Debt and late-penalty forgiveness for companies and workers in order to help keep people employed.
- Favorable credit terms for firms that encounter cash flow problems
