The company brought in third-party cybersecurity experts, who determined that an unauthorized third party had acquired a small number of historical files from Freeway’s environment. A separate data-review firm was engaged to analyze what those files actually contained, results came back in June 2026, and Freeway then spent additional time confirming accurate contact information before notice letters went out. The breach was disclosed to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation on August 4, 2026.
Freeway’s notice describes the exposed material as a small number of historical files, language that can make an incident sound minor. It isn’t. Old files still contain real Social Security numbers, real driver’s license numbers, and real financial account details, information that doesn’t expire and stays useful to identity thieves for years after it’s stolen.
