Emery | Reddy, PC is seeking to speak with individuals who use a Google Nest Cam or Nest Doorbell on the free plan. High‑profile reporting has raised serious questions about how much video Google actually retains behind the scenes, and whether “deleted” truly means gone. These concerns have come to the forefront following the recovery of Nest Cam footage connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.

Call us today to speak with an experienced Intake Specialist for a Free Case Review.

Why This Matters: “Deleted” Nest Cam Footage Was Recovered

In the Guthrie case, investigators were able to recover Nest camera footage more than a week after the incident, even though the device had no paid Google Home subscription, which should have prevented long‑term storage.

The Verge reported that the FBI retrieved the footage from “residual data located in backend systems,” meaning that video the user could not access was still stored somewhere within Google’s infrastructure.

Cybersecurity experts interviewed by CBS News explained that Nest cameras often retain data longer than consumers realize due to “lazy deletion,” where files marked deleted may not actually be erased until overwritten.

This has raised enormous privacy concerns and has left many consumers wondering whether they have been misled about how the free version of Nest video storage actually works.

Why We Want to Hear From You

Emery | Reddy is currently evaluating whether Google’s storage practices are:

  • Misleading to consumers
  • Inconsistent with marketing or documentation
  • Potentially in violation of consumer‑protection laws
  • Creating privacy risks for users who believed their footage would auto‑delete

We want to speak to individuals who:

  • Use a Google Nest Cam or Nest Doorbell on the free plan
  • Believed their videos were only stored for a few hours
  • Were unaware that Google may retain data in backend systems
  • Have concerns about privacy, data retention, or inaccurate disclosures

If you fall into this group, you may have a claim.

How You Can Help

If you currently use a Nest Cam without a subscription, or have used one in the past, we would like to hear:

  • What Google communicated to you about video retention
  • Whether you believed your footage was deleted after a short window
  • Whether you experienced missing footage, unexpected data retention, or unclear storage terms
  • Any disclosures Google provided when you purchased or installed the device

Your experience may help determine whether Google’s practices are transparent, or if consumers are being misled about how their home surveillance data is stored and handled.
